UsbTerminal is a terminal emulator, also referred to as a "monitor." It is designed to be utilized through a physical connection to the device via the USB port of a phone or tablet. The device being used must support USB-Host Mode, commonly known as USB On-The-Go (USB-OTG), and an appropriate USB-OTG cable is necessary.
Potential applications for this application include:
- Controlling IoT devices like Arduino, ESP32, etc.
- Managing communication devices such as routers equipped with a serial console connector (with a potential requirement for a USB to RS232 converter cable).
UsbTerminal is an open-source software which can be accessed at this GitHub repository.
Key features:
- Support for devices using various USB to Serial protocols/chips, including CDC-ACM (e.g., Arduino Uno R3), FTDI (FT232R, FT232H, etc.), Prolific PL2303, CH34x, and Silabs CP210x (e.g., ESP32 dev boards from Espressif).
- Two keyboard input modes: Auto mode where characters are immediately sent to the device as keys are pressed, and a Dedicated Input Field mode where input is dispatched upon pressing a "Send" button.
- Partial support for ANSI/VT100 escape sequences such as text coloring.
- Display options: Text and Hex modes.
- Background communications functionality allows for data reception even when the app is in the background.
- Sessions can be logged to files for further analysis or sharing with external tools.
- Capability to send control characters (e.g., Ctrl-C) and control DTR and CTS.
- Includes a large scroll-back buffer, a blinking cursor, and a status line displaying connection state, error messages, cursor location, screen size, and display mode.
- Built-in help resources and shortcuts for resetting Arduino and ESP32 dev boards without necessitating root access or special permissions.
Note for Arduino users:
UsbTerminal offers an advantage in how it manages DTR signals. While traditional connections might cause an Arduino board to reboot each time a terminal emulator is linked, UsbTerminal ensures that the DTR signal remains unaltered unless specifically controlled. Consequently, when employing UsbTerminal with your phone or tablet connected to an Arduino, the board stays operational unless manual intervention is made using the dedicated DTR control within the application.
